Caving equipment and clothing has changed significantly since the beginnings of the sport over a hundred years ago when cotton jackets and clothe caps were de rigueur. Since then much has changed and cavers now have a wide range of choice for their journey underground. Caving is a sometimes tough sport and making the right choices about clothing can make the difference between a cold sometimes painful trip and a warm enjoyable one.

Caving clothing can be split into under clothing, oversuits and accessories (although vital) so we have given you a selection of each. Every caver has his or her choice of clothing and there is regional variations but we have tried to tell the benefits and draw backs of each piece of kit. Although there are many small companies producing good quality caving equipment there are few global brands but we have tried to give you links to the main options in terms of brands to choose from.
